„Srebrenica mothers" is the association of citizens gathering the surviving mothers who after the fall of the protected area of Srebrenica in 1995 lost their sons, husbands, brothers amd other male members of their families. This association is searching for missing persons and helping the survivors who, in spite of the terrible tragedy, returned to their destroyed homes.
Main activities
- Provide support to the surviving mothers who still search for their missing family members;
- We search and are engaged to find potential donors who will help the returnees with livestock - cows, sheep, goats and agiculturale tools so they can survive after their return to Srebrenica;
- We advocate for getting the special status for Srebrenica and in that way accelerate the reconstruction and rehabilitation process;
- We strive that all war criminals who participated in the Srebrenica massacre be arrested.
The president of the association "Srebrenica mothers" is Hatidza Mehmedovic. She returned to Srebrenica in 2002 and founded this association. In July 1995, she lost two sons, husband and all her male family members. Today she is living all alone in her house in Srebrenica.
In the association "Srebrenica mothers"she gathered mothers who retuned to the town and the neighbouring villages of Srebrenica. Hatidža Mehmedović says: "If we cannot bring back the dead, let´s help the victims."
In the Project "1000 women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005" Hatidza was nominated as one of the candidates for this respectable prize. Her nomination was explained with the fact that she is working very eagerly and unresting in the search for the missing and that she is strongly supporting all mothers whose children and male relatives were killed, and they retuned to Srebrenica.
